Why I Just Can’t Stop Wearing Fulani Braids

I didn’t grow up calling them Fulani braids.

To me, the Fulani braids were just ‘those kind of braids with beads’ — a signature look I saw in photo albums of my mum and aunties from the ‘80s. The ones little girls wore for Christmas, if they didn’t do a sleek gel, and the ones older women wore. Back then, I just thought these braids were beautiful.

Fast forward to the time I had to start caring for my hair myself, and navigating the ever-changing routine — from experimenting with twist-outs to dealing with heat damage from silk presses — Fulani braids became a soft landing for me. It’s been my go-to protective hairstyle whenever I find myself overwhelmed by what to do with my hair. And like they say, “life is too short to wear boring hair” — Fulani braids hold a memory of culture and identity; it’s fun, flirty, and has endless styling options with beads.

Yet, deciding to get Fulani braids isn’t always straightforward. There’s the indecision of “should I try something new?” mixed with the practicality of “what hairstyle will last me three to four weeks?” and how I don’t want to sit for too long at the salon.

Sometimes I scroll through Instagram for hours, trying to convince myself to go for something edgier. But the moment I remember how low-maintenance, long-lasting, and versatile Fulani braids are, and how these braids frame my face perfectly, I give in. Again. Even if it means sitting for four to seven hours, I know the result will be worth every minute.

Fulani braids are a full-on experience, the definition of protective hairstyle. Plus, the hairstyle is also functional. Whether I’m running errands or attending a wedding, Fulani braids always match the moment.

Let’s be honest, managing curls and coils can feel like a full-time job, and these braids offer a much-needed break. Fulani braids shield our strands from daily manipulation, heat, and breakage while still looking effortlessly put together. The braids also age beautifully, looking even better a week after your salon appointment.

If you’re still wondering why Fulani braids have remained my top choice year after year, there’s more.

I get to try out different patterns and stress-free styling options. I can decide to wear a middle part or a side part when I make a flip-over Fulani braid. Colour variations like golden brown, deep burgundy, and even ombré blends add a playful edge. Accessories like beads bring the final touch of personality and cultural flair.

And let’s not forget the cultural pride that comes with wearing Fulani braids. The hairstyle is deeply rooted in the traditions of the Fulani people of West Africa, carrying generations of meaning and beauty. Wearing it feels like more than just a fashion choice; it’s a celebration of heritage, a connection to identity, and a quiet nod to those who wore it before us.

Celebrities have also elevated the hairstyle, making it even more exciting to wear. From Alicia Keys to Rihanna, these women have made Fulani braids red carpet-worthy. Their versions are often decked out with beads or pearls, intricate patterns, or even Swarovski crystals, making you see the endless creative potential of the “traditional” hairstyle.

But the truth is, even without the glitz, Fulani braids are classic, confident, and current, all at once. Whether you’re wearing a simple tee with a pair of denim pants or a full aso-ebi set, the hairstyle is perfect for any occasion. So no matter how trends shift, Fulani braids will always remain timeless.

It’s a hairstyle that never feels repetitive; it constantly evolves with each wear, taking on new expressions and always leaving a lasting impression.
