Olivier Rousteing Departs Balmain After 16 Years With the French Luxury Brand

Olivier Rousteing has officially announced his departure from Balmain, marking the end of a monumental 16-year journey with the iconic French luxury house.

Of those years, 14 were spent as creative director, a role he assumed at the remarkably young age of 24, making him the first Black designer to lead a prominent French luxury brand. Rousteing’s era at Balmain has been characterized by his innovative spirit and fresh vision while reshaping the identity of the brand for a modern audience.

In a heartfelt post shared on Instagram on November 5, Rousteing expressed gratitude and optimism as he moves on from Balmain: “I arrived at 24 with my eyes wide open and the determination to persevere, always. Today, I leave the House of Balmain with my eyes still wide open—open to the future and to the beautiful adventures ahead, adventures in which all of you will have a place.” His sentiment captures not only his commitment to the brand but also the evolving narrative of luxury fashion in the contemporary age.

Rousteing’s significant contributions to Balmain have not gone unnoticed. Earlier this fall, he was honored with the 2025 Couture Council Award for Artistry. Reflecting on his tenure during a conversation with ELLE, Rousteing looked back on his early days at the house, recalling how he transitioned from a “quiet apprentice” to a dynamic and determined leader. He noted, “When I was 26, I would say that I became myself, which [meant] breaking boundaries and not being scared because I was taking a risk.”

During his time at Balmain, Rousteing not only redefined the brand’s aesthetic but also championed inclusivity and diversity within the fashion industry. He emphasized the importance of heritage and legacy, stating that he began to appreciate the history of Balmain and its founder, Monsieur Pierre Balmain, as he celebrated milestones in his career. “Around 30, I started to think a lot more of the heritage and the legacy of the house—to look at the archives and the story of Monsieur Pierre Balmain,” he noted, illustrating his deep respect for the maison’s storied past.

Rousteing also revolutionized the brand’s identity by merging pop culture with high fashion, creating what many have dubbed the “Balmain Army” and delivering memorable pieces like Tyla’s sand sculpture Met Gala dress. His work not only elevated Balmain’s profile but also challenged the norms of fashion, as he embraced the influence of celebrities, with Rihanna being a pivotal muse. Rousteing credits her for encouraging him to break free from traditional constraints, reminding him that creative risks are essential to avoid future regret.

His approach to design has evolved over the years; in recent seasons, he has shifted towards a more understated aesthetic that emphasizes craftsmanship. This transition reflects his personal growth and maturation as he enters his 40s, signaling a new era for both him and Balmain.

Rousteing’s exit signifies the conclusion of an important chapter in Balmain’s rich history. The brand’s executives have expressed their heartfelt gratitude for his transformative contributions, ensuring that Rousteing will be remembered as a key figure in Balmain’s legacy. In their statement, they mentioned the anticipation for a “new creative organization” to be announced, hinting at exciting changes to come.
